What is EN15232 "Energy performance of buildings – Impact of Building Automation, Controls and Building Management"?

EN 15232 allows estimation of the energy efficiency obtainable through the BACS and TBM. The simplified method does not offer precision calculations, but provides a good overview of the benefits to be expected from a control system upgrade; it enables the user and building owner to assess the present degree of efficiency of the control systems. The use of efficiency factors allows a building owner to calculate the expected profitability of an investment in BACS upgrades.

How does eu.bac system audit fit with BREEAM and LEED?

eu.bac system audit is actually complimentary to the aforementioned certification systems and standards. eu.bac system audit assists both the BREEAM and LEED certification systems by taking an in depth look at the BACS. In both BREEAM and LEED the BACS is left somewhat un-investigated by the process, this is because both processes are designed to take a much more holistic view of buildings. eu.bac system takes a deep dive into how the BACS is designed, installed and operated.

What is a Key Performance Indicator (KPI)?
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are values out of operational data of a BACS giving information about the energy efficiency of a specific part of a BACS component / function
  • An evaluation of these values over a certain observation period is used to determine the performance of the observed BACS component / building part
How long does the audit last for?

The eu.bac system audit label expires after 3 years. Six months prior to expiry you will be notified about the situation, this will also include details on how to proceed with re-certifying your BACS system. Nevertheless eu.bac recommends to do a yearly check of your system in the interest of sustainability and energy efficiency. Full implementation and monitoring of KPIs will support an energy efficient operation and reduce need for regular checks.

How long will an audit take and what will be the costs?

Initial audit should not take longer than 1 or 2 days for a commercial building dependant on the complexity of the building and the preparation.
Costs for the official label is 100€ - offer for the audit will come from the auditors.

Is eu.bac system audit a legal requirement?

Not yet – so far it is voluntary only. Eu.bac is in close contact with regulatory bodies and authorities.

But as it is based on EN15232 and therefore linked with the EPBD it is an essential part of the European energy efficiency initiative. Financial support or benefits could be granted based on national EPBD implementations. Please check with your local partners.

How do I become a eu.bac system auditor?

By simply completing the two days training course you will become a junior auditor. You will then complete your first audit, and upon approval you will be reclassified as a qualified auditor.
